Fashion education in the context of environmental sustainability: A weaving-based learning process with waste textile materials
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this study, I demonstrate how integrating traditional weaving techniques with sustainable fashion education develops students’ technical skills, aesthetic awareness, and sense of environmental responsibility. I aim to create an innovative and sustainable learning experience by repurposing waste textile materials. Using a descriptive analysis approach within qualitative research methods, I examine the products of fourteen first-year students enrolled in a Textile Technologies Programme at a vocational school. The students wove waste fabrics on frame looms to produce unique surfaces and transformed these into contemporary garment designs. I collected data through structured observation forms and process-focused photographic documentation, and I analysed the data thematically. The findings indicate that students enhanced their technical competence, deepened their material knowledge, and made deliberate aesthetic decisions. Moreover, they integrated environmental responsibility and sustainability into their design processes. Sustainable fashion education should extend beyond theoretical knowledge and be reinforced through practice-based learning experiences.
